Israel-Hamas conflict: Advice for schools

Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, the Minister for Schools has written to schools and colleges to provide advice on how to respond to the Israel-Hamas conflict in the classroom.

The letter states that: “Hamas is a proscribed terrorist organisation and it is illegal to encourage support for them. This would also be contrary to the British values that schools and colleges should promote and embody.”

To support senior leaders and teachers manage these discussions, there are a range of resources to help with challenging discrimination and intolerance and provide advice on how to respond where there are concerns.

Devon Local Authority has also recently wrote to Headteachers saying that they were mindful that the tragic events currently dominating the news and social media could have impact in schools and communities and suggesting that Headteachers may want to familiarise themselves with the DFE guidance on political impartiality in schools.
