Different types of Devon Schools

Devon has a diverse school system, schools that are maintained and supported by the Local Authority and schools that are independent from the Local Authority but directly responsible to the Secretary of State for Education.

Devon’s diverse range of schools includes those maintained and supported by the Local Authority:

  • Community Schools, nursery, primary or secondary
  • Special Schools, primary or secondary
  • Church Schools, Voluntary aided or Voluntary Controlled
  • Foundation Schools with a trust, primary or secondary
  • Foundation Schools with a co-operative trust, primary, secondary or special schools

Independent from the Local Authority and directly responsible to the Secretary of State for Education:

  • Academy Converter, primary and secondary
  • Academy Sponsor, primary and secondary
  • Multi Academy Trust (MAT) primary ad secondary

Independent from the Local Authority, Free Schools responsible to the Secretary of State for Education:

  • Free Schools, primary ad secondary
  • University Technical Colleges and technical academies, secondary 14-19 years
  • Studio Schools, secondary 14-19 years
  • Personalised Learning Service – Alternative Provision Academies, primary and secondary
