Challenging?

How do you and your board carry out your second core function of governance, holding your headteacher or chief executive to account for the performance of the school or academy and the pupils within it?

It is worth everyone involved in governance considering whether they are comfortable providing appropriate challenge, asking challenging questions and have an understanding of what challenge looks like in practice. Ofsted are always looking for evidence of challenge from the board and for schools that have been judged ‘’requires improvement’ or ‘inadequate’ in Devon recently comments such as “…governors have not sufficiently challenged senior leaders to improve the school, including the quality of education” are all too common.

The Devon Association of Governance (DAG) is discussing this important topic at the first online Community Network Forum for Governors and Trustees on Wednesday 21st February at 6pm. This free hour long forum will provide an opportunity to discuss the role of challenge in governance and consider how exclusive DAG resources can help.
