AI in Education

Bridget Phillipson, Education Secretary has stated that her vision for the future was a system in which each and every child gets a top class education, backed by evidence based tech and nurtured by inspiring teachers.

She believes that this will lead to a system in which teachers are set free by AI and other technologies, less marking, less planning, less form filling so that their drive, their energy, their passion, is fully focused on delivering change for children.

The DfE has said that from 2025 all new teachers will be trained on the effective use of assistive technology to support children with special educational needs and disabilities.

A trial by the National Foundation for Educational Research for the Education Endowment Foundation found teachers who use ChatGPT alongside a guide on using it effectively can reduce lesson planning time by 31 per cent.

The DfE will also update its policy position on AI, giving schools and colleges clarity on how to use it in the classroom.

Have you had a look at ‘Generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education’ (updated 22 January 2025)? This document sets out DfE’s position on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), including educational technology tools powered by generative AI and large language models such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot  in the education sector. It is aimed at schools and colleges, with a particular focus on AI use in compulsory education. There is also a section, Plan technology for your school,  a digital service to help schools benchmark themselves against the digital standards and receive actionable next steps on how to meet them.
