The government has accepted the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB) recommendation that teachers should have a 4% pay rise.
Additional funding of £615 million will be coming to schools to support the increase meaning that schools will still have to fund a quarter of the increase themselves from their own budgets on top of savings already identified.
Last year the government gave evidence to the School Teachers’ Review Body that a 2.8% increase would be appropriate, however, the STRB said a 2.8 per cent pay rise “risked undermining improved supply, including the additional 6,500 teachers the government has committed to recruiting”.
The Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has stated that she is “asking schools and colleges to do their part in ensuring that we are driving productivity across all areas of the public sector”.
