Hate crimes and non-crime hate incidents are on the rise and their impact on children and young people is concerning.
These incidents negatively affect attendance, academic attainment and overall well-being. In Devon, the age group most frequently linked to hate crimes is 12 to 14 year olds, with white boys identified as a key demographic of concern.
Recent data from the last academic year highlights a troubling increase in bullying, prejudice and racism in our Devon schools. Racist incidents have risen by over 18% in the past two years alone. With exclusion rates for racism in the South West being among the highest in the country. Prejudice targeting LGBTQ+ children and young people is also intensifying in severity.
