Updated School Food Standards

Compliance with the school food standards is a legal requirement for state-funded schools. The Requirements for School Food Regulations 2014 set out the standards that apply to food and drink provided to pupils on school premises.

The school food standards are designed to help children develop healthy eating habits and ensure that they have the energy and nutrition they need to get the most from their school day.

Subject to Parliamentary approval, updated school food standards will take effect from September 2027 to align with the latest government dietary recommendations. Legislation is expected later in the autumn term and updated guidance for schools and caterers will follow in due course.

What schools should do now:

• Review the proposed changes to the school food standards
• Discuss the changes with their catering provider
• Review existing menus, contracts and procurement arrangements to identify any changes that may be needed
• Plan to appoint a lead governor for school food from September 2027
• Prepare to publish their school food policy and menus on their website from September 2027
• Keep up to date with further guidance and legislative developments.
