Pupil premium Increases from April 2024

The government has announced that pupil premium and service premium rates will increase from April 2024.

From April 2024 the new rates for every primary age pupil, or for every secondary age pupil, who claims free school meals, or who has claimed free school meals in the last 6 years will be:

  • £1,480 per primary-aged pupil (at present £1,455)
  • £1,050 per secondary-aged pupil (at present £1,035)
  • £2,570 per child adopted from care or looked after by LA (at present £2,530)
  • £340 for every pupil with a parent who is serving in HM Forces or has retired on a pension from the Ministry of Defence (at present £335).

Pupil premium is funding to improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in schools in England. Evidence shows that disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils. Schools must show how they’re using their pupil premium funding:

  • By publishing an online statementabout how they use their funding and the impact it has on the attainment of disadvantaged pupils
  • Through inspections by Ofsted
  • Through published performance tables.

If you would like further information on pupil premium see the DAG Busy Governors Guide to Pupil Premium.  For more information on spending this premium, read the pupil premium guide from the Education and Endowment Foundation (EEF).
