Carbon fund withdrawn

The government has dropped its £80 million low-carbon skills fund (LCSF) used by organisations to draw up applications to access grants to cut emissions.

Launched in 2020 and run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the fund gave public bodies money to engage the specialist and expert advice and skills required to develop a heat decarbonisation plan. This fund recognised that to access funding from the public sector decarbonisation scheme (PSDS) additional staff or experts/consultants would be required to deal with the complicated nature of applications and that would carry an upfront cost.

The LCSF allocated sums to hundreds of schools since 2020 helping to unlock just under £20 million from the PSDS for schools.

Emma Harrison, of the ASCL, is reported as saying: “With all education settings expected to have a climate action plan in place this year, you would hope the level of support available to help them achieve this would be increasing, not reducing.”
