The latest data on exclusions has been published for the academic year 2023 – 2024.
There were 955,000 suspensions nationally in the year 2023-24, representing an increase of 21% on the previous year. During 2023-24 there were10,900 permanent exclusions, an increase of 16% on the previous year. This translates to 13 permanent exclusions for every 10,000 pupils. The most common reason for suspensions and permanent exclusions was persistent disruptive behaviour which accounted for 51% of all reasons given for suspension and 39% of reasons for permanent exclusions. This is in line with previous years.
