Only 6% of SEND Co-ordinators have enough hours

Tes have published the results of research they commissioned into how many SEND Co-ordinators have enough time to do the job.

The research indicates that the vast majority of SEND Co-ordinators are struggling to carry out administrative tasks in work hours due to “unsustainable” workloads.

Just 6 per cent felt able to complete their administrative tasks during weekly working hours and more than half responding to a Teacher Tapp survey in September said they were already being forced to work outside of their normal hours. Another 39 per cent said they had to push tasks into the following week.

With plans to teach more pupils with special educational needs in mainstream schools, there is genuine concern that the workload of SEND Co-ordinators will increase further.

Tes reports that experts warn that the current system has moved the sector to a position where too often a school’s SENDCo is “the single point of success or failure” for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Can your board SEND governor or trustee tell you if your SEND Co-ordinator has enough hours allocated to the role to cope with the workload?
