Maintained schools: governance guide

This non statutory guidance on the strategic leadership and governance of local-authority-maintained schools has been updated.

The guidance is a reference document for those involved in local-authority maintained school governance and brings together essential information from a range of sources on the governing body’s roles and legal responsibilities.

The Department for Education (DfE) has added new parts of the guide on:

• Maximising value for pupils programme
• Free school meal expansion grant and the inclusive mainstream fund
• Digital and technology infrastructure
• Sustainability leadership and climate action plans in education.

Updates to:

• The section on equality, diversity and inclusion, with recommendations on collecting diversity data
• Supporting pupils with medical conditions, to reflect new allergy safety duties
• School uniform, to reflect a new limit on branded items of school uniform and PE kit.
